I was invited to speak the Application & Architecture Summit this week in Japan where BPM, SOA and Cloud were covered in the context of competitive Global Markets. After spending several days here, I have some impressions of the state of BPM in Japan.
A Desire for More BPM
There was a strong desire to incorporate the new opportunities that agile BPM delivers to organizations. The BPM related sessions were well attended and the participants were taking notes in a sincere and serious way. The proof point to this end is the skills shortage now appearing in Japan in the BPM arena. The supply is much smaller than the demand.
A Goal of Greater Agility with BPM
The audience was keen to hear about the inclusion of complex events processing, business rules management, unstructured processes, process snippets and social technologies in the evolving BPM technologies. Japan has been a leader in standard processes for a long time and there is a need to make new and dynamic processes.
A Quest to Skillfully Manage Agility
In order to have successful agile/dynamic processes, steps need to be put in place to manage this agility. There is a thirst to understand how to allow the standard processes to morph to more adaptive and collaborative processes. To that end, there was a curiosity around automatic business process discovery to watch the agility afforded for evolving better practices.
Bottom Line:
BPM appeals to Japan as it has been focused on delivering great processes for a long time. The desire is to get better and more agile with BPM.

This does seem like a natural progression for Japan as they have had such an impact on the manufacturing industry with the Toyota TPM concepts. Do you see BPM affecting their manufacturing industry as well as more of the R&D and/or service sectors?

Steve,
It would certainly be easier to get started in he service industires, but lean concpets would eventually lead in the same direction. The appetitie is from both directions, but service seems to have more of an immediate need.
