Misconceptions on Process Optimization and Simulation

by Jim Sinur  |  January 27, 2009  |  1 Comment

I find the common feeling around optimization and simulation is that you have to be an operations research geek to make them work and they have little to do with tangible benefits. I believe that both can be a game changer in lean times and much easier to do than perceptions would indicate. It’s not magical; it’s practical

The biggest benefit of business process optimization and simulation is that they deliver insight into dynamic processes so that they designed well .and operated effectively as conditions change. In addition processes can be significantly exercised before the processes are turned over to the users and integrated with the production systems. Optimization/Simulation overcome the issues that arise when only static pictures of parts of business processes can be looked at. Business process optimization and simulation help shift the emphasis from symptoms to the real underlying causes of inefficiency and ineffectiveness. Optimization and simulation show complex problems within their contexts and cast light on structures that can influence business process behavior and execution.

Typical benefits that are realized are:

• Decrease in total investment cost in business processes

• Make better decisions in and around processes

• More efficient and robust process execution

• More in-depth knowledge of the business processes

• Impact analysis before implementation of changes

• Earlier acceptance by participants

• Management’s recognition of the impact of processes

• Better anticipation of future change requirements

• Ability to assist scenario planning

• Ability to predict scenario response effects
