Automated Process Discovery Identifies Low Hanging Fruit

October 10th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Traditionally automated process discovery is thought in terms of determining the process model implied in a systems flow, but it is much more than that today. In some cases process discovery can watch the way people interact with systems, applications on their PCs, with applications, in portals and in BPM processes. Through some thoughtful instrumentation and analysis, organizations can save money pretty quickly.

The obvious benefit is identifying best practices across and within a number of applications. I have seen organizations reduce error rates and replicate the process patterns of the star performers. This can be translated in to real time and money savings. To that end, I am seeing a vendor community rise to support these efforts. In addition, we are seeing the application of process behavior to overall resource management and workforce optimization.

The current economic environment will require more productivity generated by working smarter. Automated Process Discovery will be one of the techniques we can apply in quick fashion. Add some automated intelligence leveraging Intelligent Decision Management and there are some long tail benefits to discover as well. This is an unfolding and evolving area that I expect to do some more research on in the coming quarters.

It’s a bit early to get a handle on the exact size of this market, but it is safe to say that it is between 100M and 150M including services. It’s small right now. .

    Hi, Jim,

I have been in and around this industry for a while and my
initial guess for the market size will be higher then 150M.
Could you share, please, your assumptions for this estimation?
Is it size now or for the next years?
is it any stats which I could look at to help me?
Thank you for your insights, there are greatly appreciated Irina

I quickly added up the portions of each vendors revenues that I am aware of and added a factor for vendors who have not made themselves known yet. This is a “now” estimate. The growth could be rapid, if it catches on going forward, and could raise my estimate in the future. .
