The End of One Era and the Beginning of Another

by Jim Holincheck  |  December 6, 2011  |  1 Comment

As I reflect on SAP’s agreement to acquire SuccessFactors, it takes me back to 2004.  At the end of that year, after a long, bitter takeover battle, Oracle finally acquired PeopleSoft.  Everything felt different.  It was the end of an era.  No longer did we have the JBLOPS (J.D, Edwards, Baan, Lawson, Oracle, PeopleSoft, and [...]

Trip Report: SilkRoad Connections Conference 2010

by Jim Holincheck  |  May 27, 2010  |  2 Comments

I had the opportunity to do one of the keynotes at SilkRoad’s first user conference earlier this week.  It is a cool experience to go to the first user conference for a vendor.  The crowd was pretty good (I do not have an official count, but I would estimate around 200 customer attendees – if [...]

What If Performance Appraisals Did Not Exist?

by Jim Holincheck  |  February 22, 2010  |  3 Comments

I have read a couple of blog posts (here and here) recently that talk about the de-motivating impact of performance appraisals.  There is certainly debate to be had about the “goodness” and “badness” of performance reviews.  It did start me thinking though.  What if performance appraisals did not exist?  Hiring/Onboarding – Performance review scores can [...]

by Jim Holincheck  |  September 24, 2009  |  Comments Off

I have been in the Bay Area for most of this week doing some consulting with clients and attending the Plateau user conference, Insights.  Plateau had a analyst session (at which I arrived late – sorry about that) where were able to get an update on the state of the business.  Plateau is profitable (on [...]

Authoria announced today that it has been acquired by Bedford Funding, a private equity (PE) firm (started by alumni from Geac).  Bedford is investing an additional $8 million in working capital (it has more than $800 million in available capital).  Jason Corsello has a good synopsis of the acquisition.  Ultimately, I believe this is a good [...]

Oracle OpenWorld 2008 – Day 2

by Jim Holincheck  |  September 24, 2008  |  1 Comment

Thomas and I started Day 2 with a briefing on Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) for the upcoming MQ for Employee Performance Management software.  Oracle continues to make progress filling in some of the functional gaps and the product remains quite good in areas such as compensation management.  The adoption rate is also quite good within [...]

Meltdown in the Financial Markets — What Does It Mean to HCM Software?

by Jim Holincheck  |  September 17, 2008  |  Comments Off

Gartner has a product offering specifically for the investor community.  We have quite a variety of investors from Venture Capitalist (VCs) to Private Equity (PE) firms to institutional investors.  The most common question, not surprisingly, that I have had from all of these constituencies is whether or not we see a slowdown in the HCM market [...]

Peter Cappelli did the opening keynote today at the Kenexa World Conference.  His presentation focused on many of themes in his book “Talent On Demand“.  Here are a couple of important takeaways/things to think about: Mobility in the external labor market has made it difficult for employers to invest in training and development.  By the [...]
