Can you go too far to achieve high performance?

I was very disturbed to hear today about the suspensions of three of the favorites in the Tour de France.  Ivan Basso (2nd last year), Jan Ullrich (3rd last year, runner-up 5 times, and champion once), Francisco Mancebo (4th last year) were all dropped from the race by their respective teams because of allegations of doping.  Alexander Vinokourov (5th last year) had 5 members of his team dropped and the team may not have enough riders to continue forward.

I do not know if the allegations are true.  I am certainly troubled by the guilty-until-proven-innocent attitude of the Tour de France.  However, if the allegations are true, it illustrates that top performance should not be achieved at all costs.  I think this translates to the business world.  Enron was a top performer by many measures in its time.  The rewards for being at the top of your sport or in business are great.  However, if people or organizations do not achieve top performance ethically, they risk catastrophic failure.   Strive for high performance, just do it the right way.
