No Email or More Social?

by Jeffrey Mann  |  August 16, 2012  |  4 Comments

Friend or Foe?” cries the clichéd sentinel on a foggy castle keep. With email, it seems no one knows how to answer that question. Without email, I could not live the way I choose to or do my work the way I like to do. Unquestionably, email has made my life better. But like most [...]

Getting Sociable at Symposium Barcelona

by Jeffrey Mann  |  November 4, 2011  |  2 Comments

Gartner’s big European event starts next week in Barcelona, a welcome change from Cannes, in my own opinion. Social is inevitably a hot topic, and I look forward to speaking with many customers over the four days of the conference. I will be doing two workshops (defining a social media strategy, and creating a SharePoint [...]

The Next Social Thing

by Jeffrey Mann  |  January 5, 2011  |  2 Comments

As social software becomes more popular and widely-adopted, it seems like everything is getting a social component. I recently tweeted some musings about what could be the next big social thing. My colleague Andy added a few more. I thought I would use this longer format to add some possibilities of what these Next Big [...]

Cannes Symposium 2010

by Jeffrey Mann  |  November 19, 2010  |  1 Comment

Symposium is usually an intense experience, and this year was no different. This year 3300 attended the event, a 21% increase over last year. It was the biggest EMEA Symposium in the last ten years. Close to 100 analysts did 200 presentations, almost 2200 1on1 meetings, and about 40 user roundtables. Personally, I did 26 [...]

What People Asked About on My European Social Media Tour

by Jeffrey Mann  |  October 17, 2010  |  1 Comment

Last week, I had the chance to do a quick tour around Europe with Ed Thompson talking to over 300 people about social media in London, Utrecht, Zurich, Milan, and Frankfurt. I talked about developing strategy, and Ed covered social CRM. While five cities in five days is a quick pace, it’s not out of [...]

What Do You Find Creepy?

by Jeffrey Mann  |  September 30, 2010  |  3 Comments

My last post got several interesting comments, which got got me thinking about what is creepy, and what to do about it. The uncomfortable feelings that some social software implementations create can be a major inhibitor of adoption, so understanding what My colleague Nick Jones offered a potential algorithm for determining levels of creepiness, but [...]

Interesting analysis, but not really mine

by Jeffrey Mann  |  August 27, 2010  |  2 Comments

Last week I did a Gartner webinar on trends in social software. These are fun to do, because I get to talk to lots of people at once rather than the one on one inquiries I usually do. They also generate a fair amount of discussion and comment on blogs, Twitter and in the media, [...]

Have a Happy Safer Internet Day

by Jeffrey Mann  |  February 9, 2010  |  1 Comment

You may not have realized it, but today is the third annual Safer Internet Day, a day to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially for children and young people around the world. The awkward name, doofy logo and stiff language quickly identify this as a government initiative (with [...]

Great UI needed for social software controls

by Jeffrey Mann  |  February 1, 2009  |  6 Comments

This New York Times article reflects an issue that has been lurking at the back of my mind ever since I started using social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Yammer, Linkedin and my infrequent private blog. While I’m not a really high volume poster, I like to share a fair amount of stuff on [...]

Why I Tweet

by Jeffrey Mann  |  January 12, 2009  |  8 Comments

I’ve been using Twitter for the last ten months or so, and many people have asked me why. How can sending 140 character missives into the ether be a good thing? The simplest answer is that it’s fun. I enjoy coming up with quick little updates on what I am thinking about or doing, and [...]
