The Internet’s Eccentric French Uncle Passes from the Scene

by Jeffrey Mann  |  June 29, 2012  |  Submit a Comment

Ah Minitel.I always had a soft spot for this strange, pre-HTTP online service. It was kind of like the Internet, except for most of the things that make the Internet so compelling. And now it is finally going away. To be honest, I didn’t realize it was still around so its continued existence was the [...]

Getting Sociable at Symposium Barcelona

by Jeffrey Mann  |  November 4, 2011  |  2 Comments

Gartner’s big European event starts next week in Barcelona, a welcome change from Cannes, in my own opinion. Social is inevitably a hot topic, and I look forward to speaking with many customers over the four days of the conference. I will be doing two workshops (defining a social media strategy, and creating a SharePoint [...]

Cannes Symposium 2010

by Jeffrey Mann  |  November 19, 2010  |  1 Comment

Symposium is usually an intense experience, and this year was no different. This year 3300 attended the event, a 21% increase over last year. It was the biggest EMEA Symposium in the last ten years. Close to 100 analysts did 200 presentations, almost 2200 1on1 meetings, and about 40 user roundtables. Personally, I did 26 [...]

Hyves Sells Out to Telegraaf Newspaper: Is There a Future for Local Social Media?

by Jeffrey Mann  |  November 1, 2010  |  2 Comments

Today’s announcement that the Telegraaf Media Groep has acquired the company behind the Hyves social networking site is another troubling sign for locally-oriented media sites. Hyves has achieved quite good penetration in the Dutch market, with almost 11 million Dutch users, over half the total population. Despite its efforts, it hasn’t succeeded much in growing [...]

What People Asked About on My European Social Media Tour

by Jeffrey Mann  |  October 17, 2010  |  1 Comment

Last week, I had the chance to do a quick tour around Europe with Ed Thompson talking to over 300 people about social media in London, Utrecht, Zurich, Milan, and Frankfurt. I talked about developing strategy, and Ed covered social CRM. While five cities in five days is a quick pace, it’s not out of [...]

TED Global: Day 0

by Jeffrey Mann  |  July 12, 2010  |  3 Comments

I arrived in Oxford, UK today for the TED Global conference  have been looking forward to this specifically for almost a year, and generally since I first heard about from friends who went to one one of the first TED (technology, education, design) conferences organized by Richard Saul Wurman. The conference’s influence has grown enormously [...]

Talking Social at United Nations Agencies

by Jeffrey Mann  |  June 20, 2010  |  5 Comments

I haven’t been blogging or tweeting much in the last couple weeks. I’ve had my head down while getting the magic quadrant for externally-facing social software ready for review and finishing the bulk of work on the Cannes Symposium agenda. Neither of these are completely finished yet, but both are close enough for people to [...]

KLM Shows How to Use Social Media During Ash crisis, and Air France How Not to

by Jeffrey Mann  |  April 18, 2010  |  27 Comments

I spent a good part of the weekend surfing web sites to find more information about how the volcano eruption in Iceland is decimating travel in Europe; partly because it is a fascinating event, but mostly because my wife is in Canada and wants to get home. I booked her tickets using points on KLM.com, [...]

Recruitment Like It’s 1999

by Jeffrey Mann  |  March 8, 2010  |  Submit a Comment

I can tell that I haven’t taken a long flight or train trip recently, because I haven’t blogged in a while. That’s when I get the most reflective. In the train from Amsterdam to Brussels this morning, I saw a recruitment ad that might be the best indicator that the dark days of recession are [...]

Internet Tech in Europe: LeWeb 2009

by Jeffrey Mann  |  December 19, 2009  |  2 Comments

It was a hectic, but fun and informative two days at entrepreneur Loic Lemeur’s LeWeb conference for high tech startups in Paris earlier this month. I was looking for exposure to new ideas and activities, and mostly achieve that. That’s me at the lower right of the picture. For those not there, Ustream has posted [...]
