I have the Outlook Social Connector on my work Outlook email, and it has had some interesting side effects.
For the Facebook neophyte, that hasn’t paid attention to privacy settings, I now see work colleague’s Facebook posts. Do I really need to see you dressed in a chicken outfit for your nephews birthday party? Or know about the latest Washington post article you read on hooker arrests?
I really believe that, like horse whips on horseless carriages, it’s just a maturation process. But in the meantime, it’s interesting to see what happens. The increased overlap of personal and work personas is something I think we’ll be dealing with for a long time to come. Can’t wait to see if this translates into a hostile work environment lawsuit somewhere along the road… or the other sociological implications this may have. Like are we entering a new Victorian era?
I’ll be speaking about these and more trends, and how they affect IT and IT work, at our Catalyst Conference in San Diego in August…
