Day 1 of the Gartner Security Summit: Part 1

June 29th, 2009 · No Comments

We opened the 15th annual Gartner Security Summit near Washington, DC with about 1200 attendees.

Adam Hils and I co-presented a tutorial yesterday on the Security Business Opportunities for SMB security.  It turned out that most of the attendees were from security vendors, so we adjusted some of the material in mid-stream to present some additional data analysis.

At noon today I delivered a brief presentation on the 2009 Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Magic Quadrant to a full room.   I spent some time discussing the value propositions for each of the four quadrants, and an example of how short-listing on leaders can be a short-change. Many of the questions from attendees were on what changes we see between the IPS and firewall markets towards an integrated product, and asking for strengths and cautions of a few specific vendors.  I think is was an eye opener for some of the vendors who were in attendance to hear the open-ended questions that customers ask us how we respond.
