ITSec has a long and shameful history of taking any newsitem and trying to find a nexus that means you need more ITSec. The worm turns, and we are seeing another barrage of bad marketing around linking the downturn and ITSec in some very unbelievable ways.
Don’t reward companies that use FUD like hackers will have more time to hack during a downturn, some kind of multi-billion dollar vulnerability market will spring up making the Dutch Tulip boom look like a yard sale, or software makers will be laying off all of their QA people and products will be radically more vulnerable.
Look for companies that provide pragmatic solutions to uncertain times – anything that doesn’t lock you into capital expenditure or a specified amount of throughput is of practical benefit.
