Survey Says … Chief Legal Officers Need Better Partnerships With CIOs

by French Caldwell  |  March 15, 2012  |  1 Comment

The first-ever CLO survey from Gartner and ALM, a leading provider of news and information for the legal profession, provides important insights into CLOs’ views on how IT is — and should — support the legal department. Gartner and ALM conducted the CLO survey in October 2011.  Four findings in particular stand out:

  • Among CLOs who communicated with their enterprises’ CIOs more than once a month, 76% reported having changed their legal strategies and 82% their corporate policies after conferring with CIOs.
  • The top three priorities for the office of the CLO are compliance, client/customer satisfaction and risk management.
  • Most CLOs, 76%, say that IT department support for the legal department is ad hoc. Only 16% report dedicated IT support.
  • A large number of CLOs, 34%, report that IT failures have caused legal problems in their enterprises.

Bottomline — Enterprises can benefit from a tigther CLO and CIO partnership.

Thank you French for sharing some of the insight on the CLO survey.

I do believe this are the new realities that CIOs have to deal with. Today’s CIOs have to be top performers in multiple disci¬plines: just like a pentathlete who has to master different disciplines. The CIO has to manage a diverse IT land¬scape, lead change, mitigate risks and control budgets.

We did run a similar survey but focused on the CFO. The outcome: enterprises can benefit from a tighter CFO and CIO partnership (http://is.gd/gqDoRQ).

Collaboration, or improved partnership, is key to the success. And to manage all these different disciplines, CIOs need equipment that reliably supports them. An integrated IT portfolio is the right kind of equipment as Gartner stipulates that in the report “Magic Quadrant for Integrated IT Portfolio Analysis Applications” by Daniel B. Stang.
