Please forgive me for quoting a beloved but gnarly Aerosmith lyric – I can’t get this one out of my head: “I’m back! Back in the saddle again!” Why, might you ask, are these words playing just a bit obnoxiously in my background, like too-loud elevator music, distracting me from my routine musings and mulling? Because after a nearly two and one-half year hiatus, I am thrilled to be once again jumping into the role of blogger.
For those of you who were not aware of my pre-Gartner life, I ran my own procurement technology research/publishing business for nearly eight years. Cool Tools for Purchasing and its blog attracted more than 20,000 page views per month when I closed up shop and joined Gartner in June 2006. As successful as it was, there was no way my boutique business could match the credibility and reach of Gartner, . . . and so here I happily came! Good investment advice from my savvy father-in-law, Warner Wilson, sums up my move quite well. He once told me, “Smart investing isn’t as much about knowing when to get in, as it is about knowing when to get out.” And moving to Gartner was a great opportunity, even if that meant giving up my blog for a while.
Blogging does carry risks – I’ve certainly seen a lot of very foolish things over the years on others’ blogs, from public recountings of bad first impressions of private meetings (just imagine how the poorly viewed subject felt when he/she read all about it the next day!) to green-eyed prose carefully crafted to irritate competitors. I don’t blame Gartner one bit for treading cautiously into this space.
Please accept my apologies for an inaugural entry that is totally devoid of research content. But finally, yes, Gartner is in the blogging business, and I am live again. “I’m back! Back in the saddle again.!” I guess that line will be playing in my head for a while.
