I’ve been amazed at the sheer avalanche of material published on the current or potential impacts of automation on human employment, but surprised how little of it seems actionable for enterprise IT. That’s unfortunate since enterprises are where technological unemployment will occur – where the rubber tread of a robot meets the road.
Instead, many of the articles (see a “best of” list in my posting Recommended Reading on Automation and the Future of Work) wind up debating solutions that very few of us can implement outside the voting booth or calls for collective dismay. Policy-making and restructuring capitalism are the most common preventive responses on offer, and unless you’re a policy maker there’s probably not a lot you can do about that. Some advice is targeted at parents or those influencing school curriculum to teach students higher-order skills less likely to be automated, or to teach robotics.
But there are quite a lot of things that organizations can do to create consistency in timing and technology decisions and minimize disruptions on the human workforce when applying automation technology. In my research it’s become clear to me that business and IT leaders must create organizational competency around the application of automation technology to ride the growing wave of capabilities by “robots.” And that angle is what I’ll be focusing on in my upcoming Symposium presentation “To Avoid Working For ‘Robots’, Make Them Work For You” on October 20th in sunny Orlando, Florida.
