Survey Results from the Social Media Strategy Webinar

Last Thursday, David Mario Smith and I delivered a webinar titled “Taking A Strategic Approach to Social Media.” During the webinar we asked the attendees three questions about their social media initiatives. Here are the results from those polls.

Question: How would you characterize your organization’s social media initiatives? 234 people answered this question.

20% – We’re trying to figure out what to do, but haven’t implemented anything yet.

20% – We’re experimenting with social media internally.

30% – We’re experimenting with social media externally.

27% – We’re well underway with a number of initiatives.

3% – We’re old pros with social media.

Question: What is the top reason your organization is investing in social media? 266 people answered this question.

31% – Strengthen customer relationships

34% – Enhance brand awareness

6% – Share information with business partners

28% – Help people find and work better with each other

1% – Meet CEO or board objectives

Question: Who is leading your social media initiatives? 225 people answered this question.

31% – Multiple lines of business

11% – Social media steering committee

12% – IT

37% – Marketing

9% – Other support orgs (PR, HR, etc.)

It’s interesting that the results of this survey are quite similar to the responses from the webinar we did last October. Even though social media continues to be a hot topic with clients, it is still most often led by marketing. Few organizations are putting a guiding structure in place such as a social media steering committee. We are encouraged to see a significant number of internally-focused deployments but the opportunity to use social with business partners remains largely untapped.

If you didn’t have a chance to listen to the webinar, here is the link to the replay.
