A Collaborative Army

October 14th, 2008 · No Comments

I am impressed and encouraged with the amount of interaction and participation I’ve had recently (and here at Symposium) with the U.S. Army around social applications and mass collaboration. More and more I see the Army taking the lead in capitalizing on communities to execute on many aspects of their mission. Many senior Army leaders get the power of mass collaboration but also recognize the significant challenges. The yearly influx of 40,000 or so 18-25 year old new soldiers is also provides some incentive. It is encouraging to see them thoughtfully addressing the mass collaboration movement.

One senior Army leader had a very interesting categorization of collaboration. They have a three fold strategy to address: 1) same time, same place 2) same time, different place, and 3) different time, different place. He fully understood that it is #3 where the scalability enables mass collaboration and the incredible potential for leveraging the community. He pointed to this as his main goal and challenge. I applaud his vision and vigor.
