First of the Month – what’s on my mind?

by Andrew White  |  May 7, 2010  |  Comments Off

Activities: Attending user conferences with SAP and  TIBCO – sniffing around for MDM stuff.  Meeting with several other vendors to get updates to MDM strategies and so on; some large vendors and some best of breed too.  A huge number of user inquiries – seems like MDM inquiry load is going through the roof.  Heard [...]

FT highlights how lean supply chains are strained due to Volcanic Ash

by Andrew White  |  April 21, 2010  |  Comments Off

I spotted an interesting article in the print edition of today’s US version of the Financial Times: Pressure grows on supply chains.  Numerous industries relay on special items, parts, and services.  Though often not of a significance in terms of cost or size, every part is needed, at the right time, to make thing work. [...]

Humorous look at ourselves

by Andrew White  |  April 21, 2010  |  Comments Off

As a past representative of the business applications market I found this set of marketing oriented “movies”, sponsored by Kinaxis, funny.  Kinaxis, a best of breed Supply Chain Management vendor, has spent a life integrating to host, legacy and large suite “ERP” packages.  I remember the time myself when I had to develop “integration” messages [...]

Something light for a Friday evening

by Andrew White  |  February 12, 2010  |  Comments Off

When I was about 12 or 14 my dad lent me this book – How to live with a neurotic dog, by Stephen Baker.  It was published in 1960 and the version I had was a paperback, with a pink cover and scruffy dog on the cover.  I loved the book – it was so [...]

Gartner’s MDM Summit – talk with us, and each other, about MDM, data quality, and data governance

by Andrew White  |  January 29, 2010  |  Comments Off

I bet you can’t resist it!  Of course, at times we are acting in “sales mode” (maybe more times than we admit) but given the hot debates internal (to Gartner) and on blogs around the place, I’d recommend coming to the next annual Gartner MDM Summit in April.  I don’t know of an event where [...]

Man’s role with respect to global warming

by Andrew White  |  December 11, 2009  |  Comments Off

Things are heating up – not least the planet.  If you haven’t heard or read about ‘Climategate’, you should go hunting.  Seems like some leaked emails from a few influential folks are causing a bit of a flutter among those that believe man is the primary cause of “global warming”. Interesting article in last week’s [...]

Google Launches Public DNS to Speed up Web (apparently)

by Andrew White  |  December 4, 2009  |  Comments Off

Interesting alert this afternoon.  Article in PCMAG.COM highlighting an announcement that Google is experimenting with a service to replace how DNS works.  Instead of our devices using the global system in place today, they would (after changing their DNS settings to point to a Google server) be routed to the desired location via Google’s own [...]

IBM’s IOD – Day Two

by Andrew White  |  October 28, 2009  |  Comments Off

Well I have to give IBM more credit for day two.  IOD 2009 opened up with a general session that was filled with customer stories of changed business outcomes, and changes in business processes.  In fact, some of the examples highlighted how “information led-transformation” was transparent since the real focus is not data, or information, [...]

IBM’s IOD – Some Highlights for Me

by Andrew White  |  October 26, 2009  |  Comments Off

So I took copious notes from the morning sessions at IBM’s IOD 2009 conference!  In fact I took so many that I might have to get them into a note format.  But, to there were three items that stood out for me that I have to tell you about.  The first is good news, the [...]

Gartner MDM Summit – Day 3/Summary

by Andrew White  |  October 8, 2009  |  2 Comments

Well, it’s over!  I am on the plane on my way home.  Hope that everyone that came found some nuggets of information that can be useful back at the office, to get an MDM effort going, to put one back on track, or to execute more effectively.  Also hope that users found new contacts that [...]
