European agreement misses the mark; Britain at risk?

by Andrew White  |  December 12, 2011  |  Comments Off

A European agreement was reached Friday that apparently resulted in the UK being “relegated to the second division of Europe”.  Britain’s Prime Minister was forced to Veto a plan for 27 countries to forge ahead with closer budgetary controls, and with the veto and lack of support, Britain’s vote “lost” 26 to 1.  Better yet, [...]

Recent FT/Economist articles of Interest (personal views follow – beware)

by Andrew White  |  September 9, 2011  |  Comments Off

A few articles I spotted over the last couple of weeks caught my attention.  Here are the more notable. Economics: Rituals of Rigour. After mistaken claims made ahead of the global crisis won much academic support, long-held assumptions were called into question – but the real world often remains overlooked or ignored. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/faba8834-cf09-11e0-86c5-00144feabdc0.html Financial Times, [...]

Book of the Month (Mar): SuperCycles: The New Economic Force Transforming Global Markets and Investment Strategies

by Andrew White  |  July 1, 2011  |  Comments Off

Book of the Month (Mar): SuperCycles: The New Economic Force Transforming Global Markets and Investment Strategies, by Arun Motianey, McGraw Hill, 2010.  I simply had to read this book: it had been covered on CNBC and anything popular that touches changes to macro economic theory had to be a good read!  I was not mistaken.  [...]

What’s it like to be an analyst?

by Andrew White  |  August 1, 2010  |  1 Comment

I went to the movies with a friend of mine to see “Inception” the other night.  It is a great movie, if you are interested in sci-fi and like to keep your mind racing along with the writer and director, trying to figure out what on earth is happening in a good story.  At dinner, [...]

Happy New Year – what did you read while on vacation?

by Andrew White  |  January 4, 2010  |  Comments Off

One of the many highlights for me, during the festive season, is the hope that I get to read more than normal.  This last season did not disappoint.  I managed to read the bumper double-edition Economist, as well as a book.  Of course, the bad news is that my “in bound” book supply increased far [...]

Al Gore – No Comment Necessary….

by Andrew White  |  November 9, 2009  |  1 Comment

The UK’s Daily Telegraph ran this story last week: Al Gore, the former US vice president, could become the world’s first carbon billionaire after investing heavily in green energy companies.   I actually found the comments posted on the Telegraph’s site, in response to the article, quite entertaining.

New Book on Winston Churchill – not one I plan to buy

by Andrew White  |  September 15, 2009  |  Comments Off

I am a Winston Churchill Fan – I have to admit.  How can one not be – living in this glorious country that is the United States, where the only man to be awarded an honorary citizenship to the US, is so revered?  I have read widely on the topic of WWII, and much about [...]

A busy, fun weekend with a tinge of sadness

by Andrew White  |  September 8, 2009  |  Comments Off

I am a soccer referee.  It’s along story – I used to play a lot; then after moving over to the US I coached a lot (3 boys – what else do you expect) and I still coach little guys now.  I stopped playing soccer about 8 years ago when I broke an ankle playing [...]

Pet Peeve – apologists for history

by Andrew White  |  September 4, 2009  |  Comments Off

I was reading an article in the BBC History Magazine, one of my favorite monthly deliveries, last night and I was very disappointed to read an article on the Industrial Revolution.  Of course, as a young boy in England my education included some information about the Industrial Revolution (which I can hardly remember – other [...]

My idol (Margaret Thatcher) – in print again

by Andrew White  |  August 21, 2009  |  Comments Off

Whole Foods Market CEO John Mackey seemed to suffer the wrath of some bloggers when we wrote an article, picked up by the Wall Street Journal, then the Economist, that swam against the populist mass-media.  To be “in” and a “good guy” one has to be seen to support socialist tendencies, but Mackey swam against [...]
