MDM needs SOA; and SOA needs MDM – do retailers get the connection?

by Andrew White  |  February 24, 2009  |  1 Comment

My colleague, Mim Burt, just published an interesting note reporting an analysis of a recent survey of retailers and their use of SOA (See Survey of Retailers’ Use of SOA: An Approach to Application Architecture, Not the Solution Itself).   The survey was conducted in Q42008 and included retailers from numerous retail segments, regionally from the [...]

Of Data Quality and its role within MDM; and defining master data (again).

by Andrew White  |  February 20, 2009  |  10 Comments

Sanjay Kumar, head of data management for Satyam Computer Services Limited, was quoted today in an Information Management article called, “5 Data Quality Management Steps for MDM”.  The article highlights how MDM won’t deliver the benefits if some DQ effort is not undertaken.  I would like to meet the user who implemented something they call, [...]

Can “single view” of master data be achieved without an MDM technology?

by Andrew White  |  February 17, 2009  |  6 Comments

In my ongoing efforts that are part of the update to the 2009 Gartner Magic Quadrant for MDM of Product Data, I took a vendor briefing last Thursday that got me thinking about the link between MDM (the technology), and MDM (the discipline). The vendor – whose name shall remain anonymous, shared their strategy with [...]

How to size the MDM market? What is ‘good’ spend and ‘bad’ spend?

by Andrew White  |  February 12, 2009  |  1 Comment

I am working on the update to the Gartner Magic Quadrant for MDM of Product Data.  I wanted to share some thoughts on how to size the MDM market. I took a briefing from NRX last week, a very interesting vendor that has a specific focus: helping firms in capital/asset/construction intensive industries manage master data and [...]

New Research Published – U.S. Customs 10+2 Legislation Is a MDM Tsunami That Threatens Unprepared Importers

by Andrew White  |  February 5, 2009  |  Comments Off

Dwight Klappich, a colleague of mine, just published a note that relates MDM, to firms that import to the US, with regulatory compliance.  This small note has a big impact.  Bottom line: firms need to start gathering (and managing) additional master data (in the procurement side of the business) in order to meet new US [...]

New Analysis from Panjiva Confirms Global Suppliers Reeling from Economic Downturn

by Andrew White  |  February 4, 2009  |  Comments Off

I highlighted Panjiva in a blog a short time ago; this new vendor buys access to import data that is readily available from (example) US Customs, as well as other international sources.  The vendor mines this data and sells, as a service, knowledge and insight gleaned from this data.  Yesterday the vendor shared some snippets [...]

New Research Published – How to Innovate through Standardization…

by Andrew White  |  February 3, 2009  |  Comments Off

Jeff Woods, one of my colleagues, just published a note describing his interview of Andrew McAfee – see Gartner Interviews Andrew McAfee on Why Investment in Enterprise Applications and ERP Matters.  The July/August 2008 issue of the Harvard Business Review (HBR) included an article by Andrew McAfee and Erik Brynjolfsson, entitled “Investing in the IT [...]

World Trade goes to hell in a hand basket

by Andrew White  |  February 2, 2009  |  Comments Off

Quite astonishingly the FT reported Friday (IMF slashes 2009 growth forecasts) that global trade fell during December 2008 at an annualized rate of 40%.  That is just mind boggling – such contractions imply economy-stopping falls in demand, and supply.  However, though this looks alarming the reality is that such falls cannot establish new (low) levels [...]
