I’m including below the feedback we’ve seen from our customers regarding technology, IT management and economic challenges. The focus on efficiency, particularly in government IT, coincides with both the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, requiring 30% energy reduction by 2015 at federal buildings; and President Obama’s Executive Order # 13514, establishing goals for the reduction of emissions in all federal facilities by 2020 and implementing best practices for energy-efficient management of servers and federal data centers. From our Data Center Users Group, we’ve also seen an increase in concern for availability and monitoring alongside efficiency, whereas energy efficiency has dominated the past couple of years. Data center managers seem to be placing more value on this balance than ever before.

Technology issues
1. Energy efficiency/savings and green technologies
2. Flexibility and adaptability to ever shifting demands
3. Reliability and availability

IT management issues
1. IT asset management and effective utilization
2. Reliability and availability of virtualized application
3. Change management/workflow automation and standards

Economic challenges
1. Flat to shrinking budgets with increased demand for service
2. Service-level agreements without the funding to support preventive maintenance to ensure maximum uptime
3. Aging data centers/critical physical infrastructure without the capital funding for upgrades and replacements
