Amazon Inks Exclusive Deal with Business Author Covey

by Allen Weiner  |  December 15, 2009  |  2 Comments

I am intrigued by Amazon’s latest news in which it announced that electronic versions of Stephen Covey’s bestselling books, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and “Principle-Centered Leadership,” will be available exclusively in the Amazon Kindle Store for $7.99. In addition, Amazon said “Kindle customers can expect to see more books by Covey available [...]

2009 Holiday E-Reader Bonanza Set to Fizzle

by Allen Weiner  |  November 30, 2009  |  1 Comment

As suggested in our research report, “E-Readers Will Take off With Holiday Shoppers in 2010,” Gartner stated that the pieces were not in place for e-readers to be the must-have holiday gift for 2009 and that 2010 was a more likely time for product take-off. Early indications confirm our research with Sony and Barnes and [...]

Taking a Page from the Apple iPod Marketing Playbook

by Allen Weiner  |  November 24, 2009  |  2 Comments

Kudos to Sony and Random House (U.K.) for some innovative marketing for its ereader. In the U.K., Sony is launching a pink ereader for fans of John Patterson (alas, one of my guilty pleasures). The reader will contain some exclusive content from John Patterson as well as a pre-release version of the latest Alex Cross [...]

Ereading in South Africa?

by Allen Weiner  |  November 16, 2009  |  2 Comments

Every time I read a blog post, like this one, reviewing the Kindle’s arrive in South Africa, I retreat to the notion that the future of ereading is on smartphones. Even with a slightly less optimal reading experience, the ubiquity of smartphones (not to mention carrier subsidized cost) is too glaring an advantage to ignore.

John Grisham on Ebooks

by Allen Weiner  |  November 3, 2009  |  1 Comment

Don’t get too excited, in this video, Grisham only acknowledges the fact that ereaders will make an impact on the number of authors who get published (as a result of lower retail prices). The world (or at least those of us who are fans of John Grisham), await the author giving the green flag to [...]

by Allen Weiner  |  October 20, 2009  |  19 Comments

Barnes and Noble ended weeks of speculation by announcing The Nook, its new ereader that should not only throw a scare into Amazon but also put somewhat of a damper on the ereading capabilities of planned tablets/devices from Apple and Microsoft. Barnes and Noble has addressed many shortcomings of existing devices with The Nook by [...]

Google Enters the Ebook Wars…I Think

by Allen Weiner  |  October 15, 2009  |  3 Comments

According to reports from the Frankfurt Book Fair, Google has announced it intentions to enter the ebook business in 2010 with something called Google Editions, creating the sort buzz only Google can generate. The search giant will offer an ebook store to compete with Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com and others, yet somehow support purchases from those etailers [...]

Patrick Barry Leaves Yahoo!’s Connected TV–What’s Next?

by Allen Weiner  |  October 12, 2009  |  Comments Off

Patrick Barry, Vice President of Yahoo’s Connected TV Group, has left the company looking for new opportunities. I would hope that the company would replace Barry in short order to ensure the company maintains momentum in the TV 2.0 space. With the holiday season approaching, and consumer electronics manufacturers making decisions on their IP-based TV [...]

Barnes and Noble’s Ereader: Take Two

by Allen Weiner  |  October 9, 2009  |  Comments Off

After some thought, I realized that B&N already has an in-store relationship with AT&T with the carrier providing free WiFi in B&N’s retail outlets. It would thus make sense for AT&T to be the book retailer’s wireless provider partner for its rumored new device.
